The Reality of the Remix

By definition, a remix is “a version of a musical recording produced by remixing”. But in reality, a remix can be a lot more than just a song. Some might even say that everything is a remixSure, this might be a bit of a bold statement, but it’s not such a silly one.

The four main sources of ‘remixes’; movies, music, books and TV

Think about it. Today, almost every movie, TV show, song, book, pretty much anything you can think of, draws its inspiration from something that already exists within our society. Your favourite sci-fi movie would no doubt take themes and ideas from the likes of Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who, and your romance novel follows a similar path as the likes of Romeo & Juliet and Pride & Prejudice.

Because of this, true originality can be hard to achieve, but that doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t create their own media and content. In fact, it means the exact opposite. Increasing fan bases and access to technology should be taking the advantage of having so much content available to them because of the internet and putting their own spin on it, essentially creating a remix.

It’s simply a reality that everything is remix in some way. We just need to embrace it.

Catch ya on the flip side,

  1. The GIF that you made is awesome! Your writing resonates perfectly with it, further emphasising that everything is a remix. It is great that you highlighted many movies that already exist, provide inspiration for other movies to be created. However, it would have been great if you could have used a solid example to further emphasise your point. Overall, your blog looks very professional, easy to navigate and organised. Well done 🙂

  2. I really love your explanation of what a remix truly is and how it can be applied to all forms of media. It’s really great to see that you have brought pop culture references such as Star Wars into your post as I believe people will actively engage in your writing, taking away the message you are portraying. Would have liked to see a couple of article links to further your points but that’s only something small. Great post!

  3. I really like your simplistic style of writing and how it is clear cut and to the point. It’s so true how everything has already been remixed and that the different genres of stories are heavily impacted by ones that have already been made. I like how you contrast this with encouraging people to still pursue content creation and the freedom to still write and have the freedom of so much accessible content around them. The way you use italics to really further your point is super helpful when reflecting on what you’ve said my only constructive criticism would be to possibly further this by writing words in Bold and and caps to really highlight your points to the reader.

  4. Awesome stuff! love your GIF and your blog! This is literally a perfect example of the exact point you make… The GIF is a remix and as is a lot of what is on the internet, almost everything has been copied and then changed in some way. Although this is inevitable I like that you still encourage originality, good stuff!

  5. All of your remediations are so cool, such a great GIF!! The post was really engaging both in content and layout, and I liked how you started out with a definition, which was a really good choice to make the information flow. Fantastic style of writing!! 🙂
